  • Title: Better Women Contraception For All

Abstract

According to UNFPA, nearly half of all pregnancies, totalling 121 million each year throughout the world, are unintended. Globally, an estimated 257 million women who want to avoid pregnancy are not using safe, modern methods of contraception.
(1) Although significant progresses have been made in the last decades, major gaps persist in addressing reproductive health needs. Unintended pregnancies remain prevalent primarily among women who do not use contraceptive, as well as those who use it inconsistently or incorrectly
(2) . The occurrence of pregnancies without deliberate planning may result in notable social, economic, and health-related impacts on individuals, families, and society at large
(3) . In addition, high rate of early switch or discontinuation of contraceptive methods remain frequent and reflects the limitations is terms of efficacy, tolerability, ease of use, and user satisfaction.
(4) Among available options, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are useful to improve adherence to contraceptives. They are effective for pregnancy prevention but also present several challenges and risks.
(5,6) The high rates of discontinuation and unintended pregnancies reflect a remaining medical need for more acceptable, reliable, and user-friendly contraceptive solutions. mdc-WWM, using Medincell’s proprietary technology BEPOâ, could be the first contraceptive to combine the following essential features to make it a best-in-class product worldwide: progestin molecule (non-MPA), 6-month duration, subcutaneous injection, full bio-resorption, affordability.

The product is intended to reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancies, improve continuation rates, and expand contraceptive options – particularly for populations underserved by existing modalities. Moreover, this development aligns with both Global Public Health and High-Income Countries priorities which would create the ideal case to product long-term sustainability. Finally, mdc-WWM has successfully completed its pre-clinical development and is currently in preparation to enter its clinical development.
